Visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic to Washington, D.C. Miroslav Lajcák, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic, visited Washington D.C. on May 7, 2009. During this successful visit Minister Lajcák held talks with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, National Security Adviser to the President, Gen. James Jones and Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Michéle Flournoy. Minister Lajcák and his American counterparts reconfirmed the excellent quality of the bilateral relationship between the two countries. The US expressed its appreciation for Slovakia´s active involvement in common efforts in the international community to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan and discussed modalities of further co-operation. Minister Lajcák, whose personal expertise on the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe issues is highly valued, gave his perspectives on current developments in the region. The parties also discussed economic cooperation possibilities between the two countries and mutual efforts to deal with the current financial and economic crisis. Minister Lajcák also gave a public lecture at the German Marshall Fund of the United States addressing current issues in the Western Balkans and emphasizing the importance of active involvement by the international community, particularly the European Union and the United States, as well as the domestic actors in the countries of the region. |
