In November 1989, the Velvet Revolution in then-Czechoslovakia started the journey of the Czech and Slovak nations toward freedom, democracy and prosperity. In the 20 years that have elapsed since 1989, Slovakia has traveled a long and successful road. Today, Slovakia is a proud member of NATO and the EU and a strategic partner, friend and close ally of the United States of America. The progress made by the Slovak Republic since the Velvet Revolution and its independence in 1993 were worthy of a grand celebration like the one held on November 18.
