FOS Wall of Honor Update The Friends of Slovakia Wall of Honor on the grounds of the Slovak Embassy in Washington is expanding. Thanks to the generous support of individuals, corporations and organizations, the current rectangular wall is nearly full! To accommodate new plaques for the classes of 2005 and 2006, we are refurbishing the current wall and adding a new section. The expansion wall will be installed this summer on the back wall of the Slovak Embassy. As many of you know, Archie Casey is the craftsman responsible for the construction of the Wall, its upkeep, and now its expansion. Archie owns the A.R. Casey Historic Building Restoration company and has been associated with the Embassy for the past seven years. He began working at the Embassy during the early construction phase and has become a loyal supporter of Slovakia and FOS. We are deeply appreciative of Archie’s assistance and efforts. The 2005 and 2006 plaques will be unveiled in early September at the Embassy’s Constitution Day Celebration. As soon as the date is finalized, FOS will notify plaque donors in the hope that they can attend the unveiling. We look forward to greeting you in person in September!
Testimonials
"We are pleased to participate in the Wall of Honor as it honors our family's Slovak heritage - with particular remembrance of the devoted service of Juraj and Gita Slavik to their nation - and serves as a legacy for our children and grandchildren."
"Jana's and my commitment to FOS
and its Wall of Honor stems from my years of work in that wonderful country.
I fell in love with Slovakia and its people and we wanted to demonstrate this through our pledge."
"We are grateful for the opportunity provided by FOS to have our names on the Wall of Honor at the Embassy. It makes me feel somehow more connected to my Slovak heritage, and I
know my grandfather (born in Proske, 1899) would be so proud!"
"The Friends of Slovakia Wall of Honor provided me with a wonderful way to honor my grandfather, Dr. Milan Hodza, the only Slovak to serve as Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia from the founding of the country until its dismemberment during World War II. "
"U.S. Steel's plaque is meant to recognize our 16,000 Kosice employees and the outstanding government, business and personal relationships we have developed throughout the Slovak Republic since late 2000 when we established U.S. Steel Kosice." (Mr. Goodish's grandfather came
to the U.S. in 1913 from what is now Slovakia.) |
